Newsletter No. 16
Last
Tuesday the Staff visited the Benedictine Monastery to visit the new library
and to be introduced to a form of ritual prayer called Lectio
Divina. It is a prayerful way of reading text from
the Bible, or any text, but the Bible is the preferred text. It involves
slowing down the reading of the sacred texts and relating them to our daily
lives. It is about seeing God in everyday happenings. There are many ways to pray. The following
story highlights one aspect of prayer.
A man and his
family were in a motel room. He was to
give a speech at a convention. The
program was extremely precise. He had
only ‘x’ number of minutes to give that speech and therefore it was important
for him to have the correct time, and he was going out of his mind because he
had misplaced his watch. His wife and
children were running all over the room looking for it. He was in a panic because time was running
short, when suddenly he shouted at the top of his voice,
‘Everybody freeze! Stop for a
moment!’
Everyone just stopped where they
were in total silence –
till they heard the ticking.
And in the silence they found the
watch.
Prayer is like that.
Prayer is not just talking to God…it’s listening. We pray through the God we find in the
busyness of life,
when we recognize our God in
the midst of our “doing”…
when we notice the smile of a
child… the beauty of the moon,
and feel the sand between
our toes.
But sometimes we need to be still…to
be quiet…to be silent…through the silence we can often hear what otherwise goes
unheard.
How often do we stop to hear the
voice of God and feel the Spirit in our lives?
Dear God, Help me to realise that sometimes meditation is the best form
of medication. Amen.
