Newsletter No. 3

Thursday, 9th February, 2006

During the past weeks our thoughts have been with the children as they have settled into a new school year.  This week I would like to pay tribute to all the families in our school community. (I thank St Mary’s Newsletter for the poem).

A Family

A family is a place

to cry and laugh

and vent frustrations,

to ask for help

and tease and yell,

to be touched and

hugged and smiled at.

A family is people

who care when you are sad,

who love you no matter what,

who share your triumphs,

who don’t expect you to be perfect,

just growing with honesty in your own decisions.

A family is a circle

where we learn to make good decisions,

where we learn to think before we do,

where we learn integrity and table manners and

respect for other people,

where we are special

where we listen and are listened to,

where we learn the rules of life

to prepare ourselves for the world.

The world is a place where anything can happen;

If we grow up in a loving family we are ready for

the world.

The school now has a number of “Nut Free Zone” signs on display.  As the next step in ensuring that no nuts are included in children’s lunches we will undertake some spot checks and children with nut products will be asked to sit away from others while they eat and then wash their hands and face before going to play.

Parent Information Evenings

Thank you to the teachers for their commitment to these late afternoon meetings and to the many parents who attended. The final meeting for Upper Stage is this afternoon at 5:30.

Bottlebrush Car Park

Good progress has been made. The bitumen is down and the new cement driveway has been build. The cement curbing is next. Thank you for your patience and safe use of the Barracuda Cres car park.

Uniforms

Thank you to parents for ensuring that children are coming to school in correct uniforms. This is our uniform transition year so wearing of the boys blue shirt or the girls check dress is acceptable and encouraged in order to wear them out.  All students are asked to wear the red polo shirts on Fridays.

A.P.R.E. NEWS

A big thank you to Mr. Byrne and the children in UB for leading us in the celebration of our Opening School Mass.  Mrs. Jenkinson and the children in MJ will lead us in prayer at our school assembly this Friday-the focus is on being positive.  Everyone is welcome.

A letter from Father Bryan regarding the Sacramental Program is enclosed with this Newsletter.  It has been given to every child in the school who is in grade three or higher.  All those families wanting to be a part of the Program this year, please note relevant dates in your diaries.

The Australian Catholic Magazine has also been distributed with this Newsletter.  If you want to read a very good article about people who want to make a difference, then I recommend the story Mercy Mission on Page 10.

Reminders:

Bishop’s Inservice Day next Friday February 17th.  All teachers will attend so there is no school on this day.

Mrs Schick & Mrs Iafrati will attend the ordination of Andrew Chase this Thursday evening at The Cathedral in Rockhampton at 7:00pm.  Holy Orders (ordination) is one of the seven sacraments.  The person called forth from the community becomes a symbol-bearer, a living reminder of God’s word to the community.  Andrew grew up in Rockhampton so it is a very exciting time for the diocese.   The ordination rite takes place in the context of Mass.  All are welcome to attend.

Could all letters regarding alter servers please be returned no later than Friday as a roster needs to be finalised.  Thanks.

Pupil Free Day – Fri. 17th Feb.

Outside School Hours Care will be open. Bookings are being taken now.  The cost will be $25 for a full day or $12.50 for a half day. Bookings are essential as there are limited places. Phone Jennifer on 0409337725.

St. Patrick’s Day Races

Each year the Catholic Primary School of the Rockhampton Region band together to host the St. Patrick’s Day Race Meeting at Callaghan Park.  This year it will be on Saturday 18th March.  The race day provides a wonderful fundraising opportunity for all schools.  In 2005 each school’s share was over $3000.  This money will be used this year to pay for the mowing and fertilising of the oval so is greatly appreciated.  Each school has nominated to accept responsibility for a particular area on the day.  Our school has the task of decorating and setting up for the day and some parent help will be needed on Friday morning 17th or Saturday morning 18th  March.   People helping out will receive free entry to the races and be shouted a drink or two.  All volunteers will also be given a polo shirt.  Please leave your name at the school office before Thursday 16th February if you can help out on these days.
